From August 1st, 2022, apprentices in horticulture in North Rhine-Westphalia will be paid more. In the first year of training, the remuneration increases by 185 euros to 850 euros, in the second year by 215 euros to 950 euros and in the third year apprentices even have 310 euros more in their wallets, for a total of 1,150 euros gross.

The training allowance for internships in preparation for or during a college or university course will also increase from 630 to 700 euros gross per month.

“With the increase in the training allowance, we now have an important argument to get more young people interested in our profession,” said Andreas Pellens, Chairman of the Tarif Commission of the State Horticultural Association of North Rhine-Westphalia. “Image and company advertising is right and important, but the salary must also be right. This way we can now get a complete package for our profession, which is urgently needed in view of the shortage of skilled workers in our green industry.”

The collective wages were negotiated by members of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Horticulture Association, the Rhineland Provincial Association of Fruit and Vegetable Growers and the Association of German Forest Tree Nurseries as employer representatives, as well as the Construction-Agricultural-Environment Industrial Union as employee representatives.
